A black leather cargo vest built to carry its own weight

The Men's Vintage Black Leather Cargo Vest is cut from full grain cowhide and given a vintage finish, so the black reads deep and slightly broken in rather than flat and plastic. It is a sleeveless utility layer you can wear over a tee in July, over a hoodie in October, and under a riding jacket when the weather turns. The antique brass hardware sits against the black instead of shouting over it.

Six pockets, and every one of them usable

Most leather vests give you two token slash pockets. This one gives you six. A snap flap chest pocket sits on the left with a leather pull tab and a brass D-ring underneath for keys, a carabiner or a glove clip. Two deep cargo pockets ride low on the front under wide snap flaps, big enough for a phone, a wallet, a folding knife or a pair of gloves. A vertical zip pocket is set into the right cargo panel for the things you do not want falling out, and inside you get a snap pocket on one side and a zip pocket on the other.

The leather and the build

Full grain cowhide is the top layer of the hide with the grain left on, which is why it creases instead of cracking and darkens instead of peeling. The front runs on a sturdy antique brass zipper with a leather backed storm edge. The back panel is plain and seamed down the middle, with no lacing and no logo, so club patches or a back print sit flat. Two buckled straps at the waist let you pull the vest in for a close fit or let it out over a sweatshirt.

Standard sizes run S through 8XL on our men's chart. If you are between sizes, long in the body, or built broader through the chest than the chart allows, choose Custom in the size dropdown and send your chest, waist, back length and shoulder measurements in inches. We cut the pattern around those numbers, and if the finished vest does not match what you sent, we remake it free.

How to wear it

Over a plain white or black tee with jeans and boots it reads clean and classic. Over a flannel or a hoodie it becomes a proper outdoor layer for riding, fishing, range days, photography or work in the yard. The armholes are cut generously and the back is unlaced, so it also sits well under a textile riding jacket without bunching at the shoulder.

Care

Wipe it with a damp cloth, use a mild soap for tough marks, and condition the leather every three to six months. Hang it on a wide padded hanger away from direct sun. Treated that way, a full grain cowhide vest outlasts most of the jackets hanging next to it.
